Bishop Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo is Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences in the Vatican. He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and was ordained a priest in 1968 in the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires and as a bishop in 2001 in Rome.He obtained his degree at the University of Buenos Aires and was awarded a Ph.D. summa cum laude in sacred theology – the highest level of Church postgraduate studies – in 1974 at the University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome. Then he gained an undergraduate degree in philosophy at the University of Perugia (1976).From 1976 to 1998 he was lecturer in the history of philosophy at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome where from 1982 onwards he was full professor in the same discipline and Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy for three consecutive terms from 1987 to 1996. From 1998 to 2013 he was full professor of the history of philosophy at LUMSA University in Rome. In 1998 he was also appointed president of the degree course in education science.
In 1998 His Holiness Pope John Paul II appointed him Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences and in 1999 Secretary of the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas.Bishop Sánchez Sorondo has obtained several awards, including an appointment as Knight of the Grand Cross by the President of the Italian Republic. In 2002 the President of the French Republic conferred him the Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur. In 2004 he became Grão Mestre da Ordem de Rio Branco, Brazil and Official of the Republic of Austria, and in 2005 “Bernardo O’Higgins” Grand Officer, Chile. In 2011 Pope Benedict XVI made him a member of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.
