Clare Matterson is Special Adviser to the Wellcome Trust for its Our Planet Our Health Priority initiative.  Clare worked for the Wellcome Trust for 18 years as Director of Strategy and Director of Culture & Society.  She led many of Wellcome’s transformative initiatives, building its public engagement and medical humanities work.  She was co-founder of Wellcome Collection and established the UK’s National STEM Learning Centre in York.

She is also currently a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Council on Food, Nutrition and Agriculture and Vice President of the EAT Foundation to create healthy and sustainable diets for all.  Clare serves on several Boards, including MQ (for research into mental health), the Science Gallery International and Flipside Festival.  She has been on advisory boards of the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum.

Previously, Clare worked as a consultant for PWC leading its higher education consulting work and worked for UK’s national higher education funding bodies.  She was a Senior Adviser to the National Inquiry into Higher Educations (the Dearing Review) and spent two years working as Executive Assistant to the Provost at the State University of New York, USA.

Clare chairs the UK National STEM Forum for Public Engagement.  She holds a Zoology degree from the University of Oxford, an honorary doctoral degree from the University of York and was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship.  She received a Fellowship from the British Science Association for outstanding contributions to public engagement and was named as one of GQs top influential women.   She was awarded a CBE for services to public engagement with science in 2015.
