Dr. Woutrina Smith is originally from Alaska and received her academic degrees from Pomona College and University of California, Davis. She is a Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology in the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California Davis, and leads the multi-campus Planetary Health Center of Expertise within the University of California Global Health Institute (UCGHI). Dr. Smith has One Health research projects in Africa and Asia, as well as in California, where multidisciplinary teams work together to solve complex health problem in innovative ways. Dr. Smith has received funding from diverse sources including the National Institutes of Health, the US Agency for International Development, the US Department of Defense, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to support her research and training endeavors. She teaches One Health, population health, and planetary health topics in the professional, graduate, and undergraduate programs at UC Davis using traditional classroom, field training, and virtual classroom environments.
